Research note: The research was carried out between 10 and 12 July 2020. At the time of the research the number of infections still rose strongly in several southern and western US states. Because of an average time delay of some two weeks between the appearance of Covid-19 symptoms and possible death, it is likely that the death numbers in the affected states will rise significantly during the coming weeks. It should also be noted that most US states report actual and probable Covid-19 deaths but some states, such as Texas, only report actual deaths that have been verified by testing.
