Mayor of Denver, USA
From John, Castle Rock, Colorado
The American National Anthem is a song that unifies this country. It is a song that has been sung for many years and is one source of American pride for those that sing and hear it. I was deeply upset that a different song was sung in your presence and you simply stood there. A song was sung that, from all accounts, is race divided. The "Black National Anthem"? I have nothing against this song, it is beautiful and if people can find hope and love from the words, fantastic. However, this is not our National Anthem, we are united under a different song. Its this type of event that furthers the gap in racial understanding and acceptance. I understand that you were not aware of this before the song, but you were the presidng person, please take a stand next time. Don't be afraid to stand up and say no, thats not right. Its that sit back and allow things to happen mentality that has eroded this country' s patriotism and morality. Own your meeting, its your responsibility. (Posted 9 July 2008)
