![]() Homeless man in New York City (Photo: Howard B Eskin) US cities expect poverty to grow further in 2006 Hunger and homelessness continued to rise in America’s big cities during 2005. Requests for emergency food assistance increase by 12 per cent, while demand for emergency shelter went up by six per cent. However, the US cities report that evacuees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita had not been a significant strain on their resources, but they are concerned about a lack of federal commitment to the evacuees. Furthermore, according to big city mayors, the outlook for 2006 is bleaker still, with 90 per cent believing hunger and homelessness will increase further. To assess the status of hunger and homelessness in America’s cities during 2005, The US Conference of Mayors surveyed 24 major cities whose mayors were members of its Task Force on Hunger and Homelessness. The survey sought information and estimates from each city on • the demand for emergency food assistance and emergency shelter and the capacity of local agencies to meet that demand; • the causes of hunger and homelessness and the demographics of the populations experiencing these problems; • exemplary programs or efforts in the cities to respond to hunger and homelessness; • the availability of affordable housing for low income people; • the outlook for the future and the impact of the economy on hunger and homelessness.
