Rafal Dutkiewicz
Mayor of Wroclaw, Poland

1 April 2008: Born in 1959 in the town of Mikstat, Rafal Dutkiewicz graduated from the Technical University of Wroclaw in applied mathematics in 1982 and also holds a PhD degree in mathematical logic obtained from the Catholic University of Lublin in 1986. He then taught at both of his alma mater and later attended the University of Freiburg in Germany. During this period he was a member of the banned Solidarity movement and later served as its secretary and president in Wroclaw. The mayor has been shortlisted for the 2008 World Mayor Award

He began a career in personnel selection in 1991 and built up one of Poland's largest headhunting organisations before heading up US company Ward Howell's Polish operation. Dutkiewicz was elected mayor of Wroclaw in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006, standing as an independent (though supported by both the Civic Platform and the Law and Justice parties) with almost 85 per cent of the vote.

In 2005 Dutkiewicz presented former US president George H.W. Bush with the city's Jan Nowak-Jezioranski Award for "his contribution in overthrowing Communism and regaining independence for Poland."

Dutkiewicz is married with two children.
